GREENFIELD: Farmers Market Opens on Sunday, May 1

The weather might seem like March, but the 2016 Greenfield market season opens this Sunday, May 1. The Market is located at Konkel Park (5151 West Layton Avenue) and is open each Sunday from 10 2 p.m. through the end of October.

The City of Greenfield is alerting patrons of the market to expect construction activity that will impact the Market in positive ways later this summer and into future seasons.

The first project is the construction of the Konkel Park Amphitheater in the space formerly occupied by the volleyball courts and adjacent to the Market path. The Amphitheater will be a community gathering space for concerts and events in Konkel Park, while also providing additional activity and entertainment space for the Market. Construction on the Amphitheater is currently ongoing with an expected completion in late May. This construction will require the replacement of grass areas adjacent to the Market path and will directly impact Market vendors on the west side of the path.

The second project is the construction of Layton Avenue from 51st Street to 60th Street. This construction will occur in two phases, but Layton Avenue will remain open throughout the duration of the project but only one lane in each direction. This project will replace aging and deteriorating sections of Layton in anticipation for the Meijer supermarket, will construct a new 57th Street south of Layton toward the Greenfield High School, and will dramatically improve the Market entrance at 51st Street with the addition of new crosswalks and push button activated street lights to improve pedestrian safety.

Though necessary, these construction efforts will be an overall positive later this year and into the future. We remind all vendors and patrons that they may need to consider alternate methods to get to the Market to minimize construction frustration. Vendors can consider taking the Loomis Road exit and coming to the Market from the east. Similarly, patrons may consider parking in the Konkel Park south parking lot (51st Street & Edgerton Avenue); this is an enjoyable 10-15 minute walk through Greenfield’s signature park.

The Greenfield Farmers Market is a place to enjoy the day with family and friends. We have musicians scheduled every weekend and are a wonderful destination for lunch and shopping.
