Village Statement on Fire Department Relocation and Construction
The Village of Greendale has released a statement regarding construction of a new fire department station and relocation during construction. Below is the statement in full:
In February 2014, the Village of Greendale retained Bray Associates Architects, Inc to conduct a thorough facility analysis and departmental needs assessment focused on the existing Fire Department facilities and its staff. The study aimed to identify the opportunities and challenges of the existing location, review the programmatic challenges of the department and propose a series of solutions to address the identified and prioritized needs.
The 58 page analysis (attached) resulted in a decision by the Village Board on November 4, 2014 to build a new fire station instead of trying to remodel the current, cramped and outdated station that was built in 1967 and had received minimal updates since construction. The size of the fire station is anticipated to increase from 8,300 square feet to approximately 17,600 square feet when the final plans are completed.
Since April 7, 2015 the Village has been working with Zimmerman Architectural Studios to evaluate three potential sites: the current fire station site, collocating the fire station on the Safety Center site, and Wisconsin Department of transportation’s vacant property located at the southeast corner of Grange Avenue and Loomis Road.
On June 2, 2015, the Village received an unsolicited offer to purchase the fire Station and replace it with a Sendik’s Food Markets Fresh2GO store. The store will include gasoline pumps. This will be the second Fresh2GO location for the local chain. The other is located in Bayside. Sendik’s plans to build a store of approximately 8,500-square feet, which will feature a Fresh2GO signature deli offering homemade paninis, sliced-to-order pizza and other fresh favorites. Additionally, full-service meat, produce and bakery departments, and an optimized grocery offering, floral and gifts.
On June 16, 2015, the Village Board unanimously agreed to accept the offer and move forward with plans to temporarily relocate the fire department operations until the new station is completed. This decision was made to transform the property into a high value tax paying property, which during the life span of the new fire station generate millions of dollars for the Village.
The new fire station is anticipated to be completed by the first quarter of 2017.
The Village is currently working on a plan to temporarily relocate the fire department operations to a site that is centrally located, with heated storage for the fire apparatus, and comfortable housing and office space for the firefighters.
The operation of our fire department is extremely important to us. The delivery of service to our residents and visitors is a top priority. Minimizing the effect on service delivery to our residents and visitors during this transition period is extremely important to us.
